Openhouse: Dark Futures

Browse through the Netflix home page and it soon becomes clear that the future isn't always bright. Shows such as The Last of Us, The Handmaid's Tale, Squid Game and other nightmarish visions reveal a fascination with dystopian fiction. But why are we drawn to these dark tales of breakdown, destruction and despair?

About our speaker:

Susan Watkins, Professor of Women's Writing at Leeds Beckett University has a special interest in dystopia, apocalyptic fiction, ageing and the future – through her own research and her teaching in Alienation and Dystopia.

Joining us for Openhouse, Susan explores our obsession with dystopia and what it can tell us about ourselves and the world we live in.

It could get dark.
