Mind: Mental Health at Work
Over 1m people helped on their workplace mental health journey. 1.4K UK businesses signed up to the Commitment for change.
Research by Mind showed that 48% of British workers had experienced a mental health problem in their current job. Yet of the 44,000 employees surveyed, only half had spoken to their employers about it, meaning 25% of the UK population were struggling in silence. Something had to change.
Mental Health at Work is a first-of-its-kind project, curated by Mind and funded by the Royal Foundation as part of its Heads Together campaign. The focus is a new website packed with tools and resources to help UK employers navigate through this sensitive subject area and create mentally healthy workspaces.
Led by expertise, lived experience and most importantly extensive user testing, Thompson created an effective name, compelling brand and website that would enable the huge project ambitions. We approached the project with an understanding that users should be at the heart of the design process. This meant rigorous rounds of testing as the website was being built. In all, several hundred users were involved across five UK locations and online testing.
The result is a trusted, authoritative space with a brand that brings humanity to what can sometimes feel like an impenetrable subject.
In October 2019, 30 of the UK’s most recognised businesses and organisations signed up to the Mental Health at Work Commitment with the ambition of encouraging employers of all sizes to improve standards of mental health on a national scale. Developed with guidance from charities, leading employers and trade organisations, the Commitment outlines six clear standards on best practice for employers to create an environment where employees can thrive. Thompson created an interactive microsite to encourage more organisations to pledge their commitment, and more than 120 businesses signed up.
